SHED – COVID Management Model of Care Changes

October 01, 2021

SHED COVID Model Of Care changes – to improve physical distancing and infection prevention protocols.

To achieve improved physical distancing in the department, the Short Stay Unit will be moving to Level 1 – Fast Track.

At a high level, the COVID model is a streaming model of care. Patients will be allocated to one of five zones based on their clinical presentation and there designated COVID risk:

  1. Resuscitation Area – critically unwell patients (COVID positive, High-Risk COVID and Low-Risk COVID).
  2. COVID Zone (Old Emergency Observation Unit) – six chairs and three sub-wait areas
  3. High-Risk COVID (Short Stay Unit) – twelve points of care
  4. Low-Risk COVID – Acute (Adult Acute) – twelve points of care
  5. Low-Risk COVID – Short Stay (Fast Track – Level 1) – sixteen points care

The leadership team has developed a draft document (attached below) that explains all of the changes – we are seeking feedback from he team as formalise it with the Executive Leadership, Infectious Disease, Infection Prevention and COVID response teams.

Additionally, from next week we will introduce Rapid Antigen Testing into the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department. A process map for Rapid Antigen Testing is included in the document.
