Admission/Entry

  • Transfer from Adult Acute (most common & preferred pathway)
  • Transfer from another ED clinical area

Hours of Operation & Length of Stay

  • Open 7 days per week 24 hours a day
  • LOS:  0 – 24 hours
  • Aim LOS: 6 – 8 hours

Inclusion Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Must meet inclusion & exclusion criteria as per the defined pathway
  • An agreed management plan
  • Patients awaiting transfer to another hospital with a confirmed bed

Exclusion Criteria:  

  • Age under sixteen years  unless agreed by senior paediatric & SSU medical staff
  • It is anticipated that the duration of treatment will be more than 24 hours
  • The patient is admitted under an inpatient team
  • The patient has been transferred to the hospital for admission under the care  of an inpatient team
  • Patients exhibiting or at risk of aggression or violence
  • Non ambulant patients with plan for disposition unknown
  • Clinical unstable
  • Major co-morbidity patient better managed by an inpatient team
  • High care needs – except those awaiting transport back to
  • Residential aged care facility
  • Third presentation in less than one week

Emergency Department -Obstetrics & Gynaecology Registrar (EDOG)

Emergency assessment for patients presenting with Obstetric and Gynecological concerns. They are assessed in the EDOG in the Short Stay Unit

  • Hours of Operation:0800 – 2100
  • After hours patient managed by ED medical staff with support from on call Obstetrics & Gynecology Registrar

 

Emergency Management/ Escalation

Medical emergency attendees:

  • SSU NIC
  • Resuscitation Nurse 1
  • Bedside Nurse
  • Resuscitation Registrar
  • Resuscitation Registrar (AM/PM)
  • ND ED Registrar

Emergency Equipment:

  • First responder trolley with intubation medications & defibrillator
  • Bedside emergency equipment packs above bed

Other:

  • Transfer to Resuscitation area as required
  • Code Blue and MET for all patients admitted under inpatient team
  • Emergency call bells
  • ALS transport back packs required

Staff Safety:

  • Code Grey: planned/unplanned
  • Personal Duress
  • 2 x wall mounted duress alarms
  • 1 x under bench duress alarm

Disposition

  • Discharge home
  • Inpatient admission
  • Transfer to another hospital/facility
