Delirium

Overview

Did you know about 10% to 18% of Australians aged 65 years or older have delirium at the time of admission to hospital, and a further 2% to 8% develop delirium during their hospital stay? Delirium can present in various ways including confusion & disruption, affecting sleep & attention. There are several causes such as infection and toxins.

Why is this important

The Delirium Clinical Care Standard aims to ensure that patients with delirium at the time of presentation to hospital receive optimal treatment to reduce the duration and severity of the condition. It also aims to ensure that patients at risk of delirium during a hospital admission are identified promptly and receive preventive strategies.
