Transfers Between The SHED and Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC)

This document provides a summary of best practice in relation to transfers between the SHED and Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC). The summary has been created to support staff during the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department Redevelopment transition and early post-move period, and has been endorsed by the ED Leadership Team.

This QRG provides an overview of the Maternity Assessment Service (MAC), located on Level Three of the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s (JKWC), and outlines the AV pre-notification and transfer processes for pregnant women from the SHED to the MAC.

This QRG is applicable to all clinical and support staff working within the SHED and the MAC.

The Head of Unit Obstetrics, SHED Director and Deputy Director of Emergency Medicine, and SHED and MAC Unit Managers are responsible for ensuring all relevant staff are aware of and comply with any processes relating to the transfer of women between the SHED and the MAC.

Guideline/Process Details:

What is the Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC)?

The MAC provides assessment and management of pregnant women from 16 weeks gestation, and up to six weeks postpartum, for both planned and unplanned presentations. The MAC operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Women >16 weeks gestation are advised to present directly to the MAC for any acute pregnancy related concerns, and when in labour. Ambulance Victoria (AV) will also take women >16 weeks gestation with pregnancy-related presentations, or who are in labour, directly to the MAC.
