FirstNet (EMR) going live in July – what EMR Phase 2.1 means for ED

February 20, 2023

The Western Health EMR Phase 2.1 project will Go-Live in July 2023, bringing a new system for the Emergency Department (FirstNet) and changing the way we deliver Best Care at our EMR sites.

It is an exciting time for the organisation, with the EMR expansion the result of many years of input and planning from clinicians and administration staff across Western Health to ensure it meets our high standards of patient safety and care

A number of new features will be introduced as part of this project, which will help not only staff that work in Emergency Medicine and Access, but also those across the hospital.

The current ED system (EDIS) will be replaced by FirstNet, which allows the department to manage both ED patient flow and care of ED patients. Patient information will also be visible to staff in other departments to assist with their preparations to care for the patient. This improved access to patient information and data will assist with clinical decision making and efficiency, and also reduce double documentation by using a single system

ED staff can look forward to real-time information on the new ED Dashboard, which will improve patient flow and help facilitate resources to areas where they are most needed.

The final two elements of the enhanced Emergency Department EMR are ED LaunchPoint and the Tracking Boards, which will give clinicians the ability to track, manage and monitor patients as either specific assigned patients or see an overview of all patients in the ED.

LaunchPoint can also be personalised with regularly used features, and the tracking board will improve efficiency by improving communication within the department and between departments.

Further information on all the EMR enhancements to the Emergency Department are available on the Digital Health information site.
