Deteriorating Patient EDuctaion Month – Week 4

April 11, 2022

Deteriorating Patient EDuctaion Month– Week 4

To conclude Deteriorating Patient EDucation Month, this week our topic is Deteriorating Behaviours.

Patients with behavioural disturbance pose risks of occupational violence and aggression (OVA) to themselves and others, including staff, other patients and visitors.

The Behaviours of Concern (BOC) chart is used to assist Emergency Department staff in the identification, escalation and response to deteriorating behaviours. The BOC Chart has been developed to give clinical staff a tool to assess the level of risk associated with behavioural disturbance, and institute safety measures to prevent deterioration.  It is based on the Broset Violence Checklist (BVC) which is an evidence-based checklist which assists with the prediction of imminent violent behaviour.
