EDucation and Support

Welcome to  Deteriorating Patient EDucation Month. The aim of this month, is to support the launch of the new procedure ‘Recognition and Management of the Deteriorating Patient in the Emergency Department (inclusive of Adult and Paediatric)’ which will take effect in all Western Health Emergency Departments from March 28th 2022. We will discuss the key changes to the way we recognise, escalate and respond to deterioration in the EDs for both non-admitted and admitted patients.

Over the course of Deteriorating Patient EDucation Month (21/3/22 – 15/4/22), we’ll be cataloging and linking all your resources here in one place for your ongoing access.

Below you’ll find resource categories for each week, including Policy, Procedure, Guidelines (PPGs), Quick Reference Guides (QRGs),  Videos and Webinars . We’ll be updating this page as we go, so check in each week for updates!

Week 2 – The Deteriorating Maternity Patient

The focus for this week will be the recognition, escalation and response to the Deteriorating Maternity Patient in ED. We will focus on the Maternity Observation and Response Chart (MORC) and hear from guest speaker Mardi Vasey.

A key component of early identification of clinical deterioration in the ED is the use of the appropriate track and trigger observation charts.  For all pregnant women and for those 6 weeks following the birth (postpartum period), the Maternity Observation and Response Chart (MORC) should be utilised (AD333.1).

Clinicians caring for pregnant women in the ED, should be aware of the physical adaptations of pregnancy.  Tune into this week’s webinar to find out more.

At Sunshine Hospital only, when the escalation of clinical deterioration in a pregnant woman is required, the relevant maternal code should be called to activate a specialist obstetric and midwifery response;

OP-GC4 Maternal Code Blue

OP-GC4 Code Pink (Obstetric Emergency)

OP-GC4 Code Green (Emergency Caesarean Section)
