This document provides a summary of best practice in relation to use of the Children’s Treatment Room at SHED. The summary has been created to support staff during the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department Redevelopment transition and early post-move period, and has been endorsed by the ED Leadership Team.
The Children’s Treatment Room in the Children’s Emergency is the preferred location for routine procedures in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). Relevant equipment to distract, provide analgesia and perform routine procedures are in the room.
Medical and Nursing staff working in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
It is the responsibility of the Nurse Unit Managers, Directors and Deputy Directors of the Emergency Department, and the Emergency Department line Managers to ensure the relevant SHED staff are familiar with this QRG, that it is implemented according to the guidelines as outlined within, and that there is compliance by all staff members.
The Children’s Treatment room is the preferred location for routine procedures in PEM. The room has been constructed to support wound and fracture care, vascular access and foreign body removal with distraction equipment and the capacity to perform sedation. Nitrous oxide (with oxygen and scavenger) connections are available.
Other than what has been prepared for the procedure, no equipment should be visible on the bench-tops. This will allow cleaning to be performed more effectively and is less intimidating for children entering the room.
The Children’s Treatment Room will receive children from within the ED. Nursing and medical staff will perform procedures within the room and staffing appropriate to the procedure should be worked out prior to the procedure. Note that sedation practice requires a certain number of staff that is dependent on the type of sedation and the procedure performed.
The cubicle nurse will bring the child to the treatment room. If there is a need for additional support for the procedure, then the Paediatric Code Nurse (PCN), Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) or Nurse Practitioner can assist.
Drawers within trolleys will be labelled at their base to facilitate restocking. Stocking should be performed every shift by nursing staff.
